About This Journal
Journal History The Journal of Academic Ophthalmology (JAO) is the official journal of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO). It was launched in 2017 and was published by Thieme. In 2024, AUPO moved to a self-publishing format on the Digital Commons Elsevier platform. All articles since inception may now be found on the current JAO site on Digital Commons Elsevier.
Publishing Schedule Historically, JAO has published two issues per year, starting in 2025, JAO has begun incremental publishing with three issues per year to make articles immediately available.

Digital Archiving The journal is preserved in CLOCKSS and Portico, the two leading preservation archives that guarantee persistent access for the very long term.
